Oscura, enigmatica, magnetica: Rickie Lee Jones sta tornando. A settembre uscità il suo nuovo album, 'It's like this', una raccolta di cover, con omaggi a Marvin Gaye ('Trouble man'), Steely Dan ('Show biz kids'), Traffic ('The low spark of high heed boys'), Beatles ('For no one') e ai musical di Broadway ('One hand, one heart' da 'West side story', 'On the street were you live' da 'My fair lady'). Questo album arriva a tre anni di distanza dall'ultimo lavoro della cantautrice californiana, lo sperimentale 'Ghostyhead', e nei ritagli di tempo Rickie ha trovato un momento per essere presente a Seattle all'inaugurazione di un museo dedicato a Jimi Hendrix, costato 240 milioni di dollari.

Rickie cosa ha significato Jimi Hendrix per te?

"Ho sempre pensato che Jimi non era come noi. Si muoveva in un modo tutto suo e riempiva lo spazio solo come sapeva fare lui. L'ho incontrato solo una volta e adesso posso dire che noi siamo stati proprio benedetti da Dio per aver avuto Jimi su questa terra. Cantava in una maniera divertente, non era perfetto, ma la sua voce aveva qualcosa di profondo. 'Electric ladyland' è stato il più grande disco mai registrato".

'Ghostyhead' è stato il tuo lavoro più sperimentale: questo nuovo è più tradizionale, come ci si sente nel passare da esperienze così differenti?

"Ho sempre fatto così: quando finisco di registrare quel disco, l'esperienza per me si è conclusa e passo a cercare qualcos'altro. Un'idea deve spingermi nella direzione opposta da quella dove provengo".
Il nuovo album è di cover: quale criterio hai seguito per raccoglierle?
"Ho risposto a due semplici domande: posso cantare bene queste canzoni? Amo interpretare questi pezzi? La risposta è stata sì, sempre".

Che impronta hai dato nell'intrepretare questi pezzi?

"Non è stato facile realizzare queste cover, prendiamo il caso di 'Low spark' di Steve Winwood: difficilissimo per me non seguire in maniera fedele il suo modo di cantare. Ci ho provato, non so se ci sono riuscita, però il mio nuovo disco ha una sua anima diversa rispetto alle canzoni originali: è un album differente, in un'epoca diversa e significa cose diverse''.

Il tuo precedente lavoro, 'Ghostyhead', è stato messo fuori catalogo dalla tua casa discografica. Perché?

"Purtroppo quei dirigenti non erano interessati a sviluppare il concerto artistico di quel lavoro, non trovo altri motivi per giustificare la loro mossa. E' molto frustrante pensare che l'unico mio disco non disponibile sul mercato è quello pubblicato di recente: non ha senso. E poi a me 'Ghostyhead' piace".

Her new CD will be released in autumn. Called "It's Like This," it contains songs by Marvin Gaye, the Beatles, Steely Dan and Traffic, "But," Rickie interjects, "all with my print on those songs, I hope."

Dark, enigmatic, magnetic, Rickie Lee Jones is returning. In September this new collection of covers, homage's to Marvin Gaye ('Trouble Man), Steely Dan ('Show Biz Kids), Traffic (The Low Spark of High Heel Boys), the Beatles (For No One) and to the musical comedies of Broadway (One hand, One Heart), from 'West Side Story, and On the Street Were You Live from My Fair Lady. This album arrives three years after the last release from the Californian singer, the experimental "Ghostyhead." Recently, Rickie found time to be present in Seattle at the inauguration of a museum dedicated to Jimi Hendrix, built at the cost of 240 million dollars.

Rickie what has Jimi Hendrix meant to you?

RICKIE: " I have always thought that Jimi was not like us. He even moved in a way that was all his own, and he seemed to fill up the space as only he knew how. I only met him once and now I can say that we have been just blessed from God in order to have had Jimi on this earth. He sang in an amusing way, not at all perfect, but his voice contained something deep. To me, "Electric Ladyland" is the most important record ever made.

"Ghostyhead' has been your most experimental record. Your new release is much more traditional. How do you explain the transition between two such different works?

RICKIE: "I have always taken a similar approach to my work. When I came to the end of the most recent recording the experience was, for me, the conclusion of a voyage in search for new territory. An idea has to push in the opposite direction from the point of departure."

The new album is made up of cover songs: What criterion do you follow in order to select them?

RICKIE: "Before recording a song I have to confront two simple questions: Can I sing these songs well? And then, do I love to interpret these pieces? The answer, for this collection of songs, has been yes, always ".

How have you given these songs your stamp? Your imprint?

RICKIE: "It hasn't been easy to do some of these songs (the way I want). Take the case of ' Low
Spark' by Steve Winwood. It was difficult for me not to follow a faithful way, his way of singing that song. I have tried, and I'm not sure if I've succeeded, but my new disc does offer these songs with a new soul, animated with a new spirit from the way they were originally recorded. It's a different album, in time of great diversity, so it signifies something diverse."

Your previous release, 'Ghostyhead', isn't being distributed by your record company. Why is that?

RICKIE: " Unfortunately the people running the company weren't interested in the vision of that record, and couldn't find the justification for the work necessary to release it. It's frustrating to realize that it's the only one of my recordings not available on the market. And it's one of my most recent works! That really doesn't make sense! I'm always pleased when I hear my work on "Ghostyhead."
